What is Kratom?
Kratom has its origins in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other countries in the region. It is still used today as a herbal remedy and in ritual celebrations. The traditional use of Kratom dates back centuries and is an integral part of the culture and daily life in some communities.
The leaves of the Kratom tree, which can grow up to 15 meters high and is also known as Mitragyna speciosa, are either chewed fresh or dried and processed into a powder or tea. Kratom contains various alkaloids that are responsible for its psychoactive and medicinal effects. In recent times, Kratom has gained popularity in many parts of the world, especially for its beneficial properties such as pain relief and anxiety alleviation.
What strains of Kratom are available?
The diversity of Kratom is evident in its various types, of which there are primarily three core varieties. Each of these variants brings specific characteristics and properties.
Red Kratom is perhaps the most commonly used. It is derived from mature leaves and gets its color from the red veins in the leaves.
The very young leaves of the Kratom tree have a light color, and white Kratom is obtained from them.
Green Kratom is obtained from leaves slightly older than those used for white Kratom and is a kind of blend of red and white Kratom.
These varieties differ in their respective alkaloid ratios, which can result in leaf discoloration. However, the alkaloid content of Kratom leaves also varies depending on the cultivation area and conditions.
Common names for Kratom also include Biak, Biak-Biak, Gra-tom, Katawn, Krton, Mabog, Mitragyne, or Mambog.
There are significant regional differences in the quality of the Kratom plant. This is because Kratom quality heavily depends on soil conditions, leading to different nutrient compositions and varied alkaloid profiles.
Although Thai Kratom and Malay Kratom originally come from Thailand and Malaysia, they are currently cultivated in Indonesia. This is due to the fact that Kratom has been banned in these countries for political reasons. In Thailand, it was legalized again in 2021.
The ingredients of Kratom consist of around 44 currently known alkaloids. The main component, approximately 65%, is Mitragynine, which research suggests is primarily responsible for its pain-relieving effects.
Paynanthein + Speciogynin (about 15%) are believed to be responsible for the muscle relaxant effects.
7-Hydroxymitragynin is present at only 2%, but it is said to have a strong pain-relieving effect.
What natural growing conditions does it need?
Mitragyna speciosa thrives best in a humid, marshy environment with high humidity. It is essential for the soil to be fertile and rich in nutrients to create optimal conditions. Additionally, Kratom trees should be protected from strong winds to ensure ideal growth conditions. Especially young Kratom trees should not be exposed to prolonged, intense sunlight. During the dry season, the Kratom tree loses its leaves, but in the rainy season, it responds with increased leaf production to restore balance.
The Impact of Kratom on People, Environment, and Economy in Indonesia
In Indonesia, Kratom culture holds significant importance. Numerous farmers sustain their families and livelihoods by harvesting and selling ground Kratom leaf powder.
When visiting the areas in Kapuas Hulu, where our farm Kratom originates, it is immediately noticeable that the economic situation of the people there is better than in other parts of Indonesia. New roads have been built, sturdy houses erected, and bridges renewed. People can send their children to school, and in some cases, even to university, which is not a given in Indonesia. Kratom leaves are also used as an alternative currency in markets to exchange essential foods such as sugar and rice. Residents and the police report a significant reduction in crime, as people are economically well-off enough to support each other. For the local population, Kratom is a crucial economic pillar.
In the past, people in Kapuas Hulu primarily worked for multinational corporations, engaging in extensive cultivation of palm oil and rubber. They were subject to predetermined prices and remained very poor despite their hard work. Nowadays, through the cultivation of Kratom, they can negotiate their own prices and decide whom they want to collaborate with. This shift has resulted in the use of fewer and fewer areas for the cultivation of palm oil and rubber. Thus, Kratom proves to be an environmentally friendly alternative on-site.

Buying Kratom in Germany? What is the current legal situation?
Is it legal to buy Kratom in Germany or Austria?
Yes, buying Kratom is allowed in both Germany and Austria. Both the trade and possession of Kratom as a color pigment are legal in both countries. Kratom powder is indeed used as a natural color pigment, especially in the production of artist paints.
Kratom can be purchased anywhere. There are many shops that offer it depending on the legal status in your country. I find my favorite varieties at Acido.shop with various flavors. It’s important to do thorough research beforehand and try out some varieties that suit you.
